But do you exactly know what Metal is? I don´t. When I was young it was very simple to say what kind of music I liked. It was Rock and Roll music and Jazz an Fusion Jazz (or Jazzrock). Today I love the music of Dream Theater and somebody say it´s Heavy Metal, others mean you should hear the difference betweeen Death Metal and ..... I don´t know all the labels. Stop - no thread about music here. We have one called "music". Well, it's not _that_ difficult to define metal imho.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_Metal I would just call it some kind of harder rock with more aggressive sound and singing, quite other lyrics and yea... Sure, not every kind of metal fits this description, but hm ^^ Labels are maybe the most unnecessary thing on earth, but it's useful for describing something.

| But let's be honest: How many metal bands have non-metal songs? I mean more than 2 or 3 songs... (I do know some, but they are not that famous and compared to the amount of "normal" metal bands it's like 0,1%.) Most of the metal bands don't have ballads or something like that. And I'm saying that as a metal fan ^^ | |

| I prefer listetning to metal genre, especially progressive,alternative..I think I'm very demanding person in case of music.I like something original. Most metal(and not only metal) singers have lyrics that go for nothing. Some sing about nothing concrete, some about broken love and some about vampires and kinda dark, evil stuff...what the hell, that's not for me!I like lyrics where u have to think what they are about and where the context is hidden.Maybe im just blind. But I don't think that there is any context in lyrics about some vampires I also hate overyelling "singing" or on the contrary, deep overroaring which i call vomiting. If you know any bands from the following band list, you will probably make out what kind of singing do I like. Ok now here's my band list : Tool Гражданская Оборона (russian underground punk band,in Engslish: National Defense;only because of a singer and his lyrics) A Perfect Circle these are my favorite bands the rest is for diversification : Mudvayne System of a Down Nirvana LVMEN (czech band) Godsmack KoRn (I hate the last two albums, total rubbish) Killing Joke Metallica (St.Anger only) | |

And I'm saying that as a metal fan ^^ Sure you're right but what I wanted to say is that you can't say which metal And I wouldn't call KISS a heavy metal band but in earlier times they were! Also Bon Jovi was called a metal band it's unbelievable but's true

| Sure, some might say Bon Jovi's a Metal band, but that's just nonsense. Bon Jovi never played Metal tunes and they will never do. In the 1980's some described Bon Jovi as Hair-Metal, but this has nothing to do with Heavy Metal, it's just what they looked like. Long long hair and much too much hairspray in it. In 1984(or so) they were supporting Kiss as an opening band. They were not very successful. Their breakthrough began with the single "Living On A Prayer" and the LP "Slippery When Wet". Horribly Mainstream their whole discography, if you ask me. But definitely not what you call Metal. | |

| Well be careful what you say! I said in the 80's the people called bon jovi a metalband because they weren't used to the music. Listen to Kiss they were also called a metalband. And Bon Jovi is definitely not Mainstream! Or do you know any other band which plays the same kind of music and were also successful in the same time? | |

And Bon Jovi is definitely not Mainstream! Or do you know any other band which plays the same kind of music and were also successful in the same time? I agree that KISS where sometimes called a metal band in the 80s, but I never heard that Bon Jovi was called so. Because Bon jovi is just simple Classic/Pop Rock, and it is mainstream, if you may want to read the definition for this term... Mainstream is, generally, the common current of thought of the majority. It is a term most often applied in the arts (i.e., music, literature, and performance). This includes:
* something that is ordinary or usual; * something that is familiar to the masses; * something that is available to the general public. And (sry but it's german) Hair-Metal (seltener auch Hairspray-Metal) ist eine Musikrichtung, die ihre Wurzeln im Glam Rock der 70er Jahre hat, von Rockbands wie Alice Cooper und Kiss inspiriert wurde und während der Achtziger mit Bands wie z.B. Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi u.a. ihren Höhepunkt als bedeutender Bestandteil des musikalischen Mainstreams hatte. But this doesn't mean that it's bad music. It's not what I like to listen, but I never take myself the right to judge about what is good music and what not. Anyway, the genre which was mainly associated with bands like Bon Jovi was Hard Rock and today Classic Rock. Hair Metal is a pseudo genre which was used to categorize some bands, too - but the music usually didn't fit the term Metal. Insiders call it False Metal ;P

You're right. But sometimes, if I want to download.. I mean buy *coughs* a song or CD, I like to read a description and want to know which kind of music I should expect. The same if I'm going to a concert. And it's very hard to describe a music without using genres or compare a band with another (:

| I totally agree with you, I also buy all the cd's in shops because then I also can listen to a section of a song. I think it's better than buying the cd's in the internet and just knowing it's for example symphonic metal. I like it but not all symphonic metal bands, and in a shop I can listen to it | |

| I possess more CDs than I can count, so yea... seems like I buy my stuff, too. But before buying it I usually want to hear what the CD is like, means I first download it. And 99% of the bands I listen to are fairly unknown, so no chance to hear them on TV, radio or something like that. And if I don't know what a (especially new) band is like, a description and genres help a lot ^^ Because if I read "gangsta hip hop from France" or "German folk music" I maybe wouldn't like to download nor buy it, because I usually don't listen to that kind of music ^^ So I'm happy that such terms exist (: | |
